Herdade Das Ferrenhas

Imagine yourself in the heart of the lovely Alentejo.

Between the rolling hills, with vineyards and olive trees, you’ll find the authentic village of Freixo. Just outside this little community a long winding road takes you to a very special property. First you have to drive five minutes between old cork trees to finally reach the bridge over a little stream that marks the beginning of this 15 hectares Herdade. At the beginning of the previous century, this was the ‘Casa de Campo’ of the first lady of Portugal. Now it’s turned into a lovely Herdade that can be used as an extended family house or turned into a boutique hotel/B&B (subject to approval).

Herdade Das Ferrenhas is fully autonomous: electricity is generated via solar panels and stored into a state-of-the-art system with batteries, with as a back-up a silent generator. Water of excellent quality is derived from a well and used for housing, irrigation of the garden and lands, and the swimming pool.

The main building is used by the current owners as family house for permanent living. It contains various bed & bath rooms, two kitchens, a large living and separate sitting room, an office and large storage room. It also has a fully separated apartment with a very spacious studio that can be used for a wide variety of activities.

Next to the main house, the Herdade has a spacious second house (approx. 90 sqm., in ruins) that can be used as a separate guest house for hosting your friends and family, or to expand capacity of tourism activity.

Historical Relevant: the Herdade once gave home and work for about 60 persons and was owned by the spouse of the first President of the Republic of Portugal. At the property – just a bit off the main house – still sits a so-called ‘Escola de Salazar’: a primary school for the children of the workers of the Herdade. This school building is now in ruins and owned by the Ministery of Education, however might be restored and used for future projects.
