Herdade Fonte Santa was in an almost ruined state when bought by the current owner and most of the restoration work was completed in 2000. It has been permanently inhabited since then.

Watermill (main house) – originally built in the 18th century, the mill was restored according to its original architectural structure using materials and building techniques of the time and region: where possible, the original walls have been preserved but properly insulated. The house has been given a new roof using the original traditional old tiles and inside the wooden ceiling is supported by massive wooden beams. The floor tiles are rustic and handmade locally.

The main living area

The main living area is of approximately 120 square meters and comprises an open plan living room, kitchen and dining room. Off the dining area through an arch is a library of about 15 square meters with three cupolas. Underneath the kitchen there’s a cellar with storage room and a pantry. The living room has French windows, which open onto a large external patio overlooking the river.

 

Connecting the main living room with the sleeping area is a hallway in which there is a small bathroom. There are two bedrooms; one en-suite with walk-in-closet of 30 square meters; the other of 12 square meters. Both rooms have access to a covered patio of 50 square meters.

2nd house – built lengthways like a traditional Alentejano farmhouse, this building was restored using the similar materials and construction techniques. It comprises an open plan living and dining room area of 40 square meters and a kitchen of 30 square meters plus 2 bedrooms; one en-suite with walk in closet, with an area of 55 square meters; the other, of 32 square meters has an adjacent bathroom.

3rd house (caretaker house) – comprises an area of 60 square meters with an open plan living, kitchen and dining room, and 2 bedrooms and a bathroom.
